THE DOVECOTE

The dovecote or pigeon house is a round stone building internally lined with brick. The building has a mid 18th Century appearance however it is not shown on the first edition of the Ordnance Survey map. These buildings were used to supply the main house with meat in winter, the food being the young chicks or ‘squeekers’ which were taken when about six weeks old.
Internally there are 293 boxes built into the brick work which would have housed 586 pigeons. The roof is corbelled and the floor is paved in stone, only part of which survives. The building was partly restored about ten years ago and is one of the best preserved of its kind in Ireland
