The Upper Garden is located to the western edge of Woodstock Gardens, adjacent to the estate boundary wall (see attached map). This area, which has been partially restored, comprises a rose pergola, a yew walk, a bulb garden and several mature specimen trees dotted through open lawn area. Several footpaths and a summer house known as Knox's Bower still remain to be restored to ensure that total restoration of this area is achieved.
The summer house was a pretty rustic arbor, rectangular in plan and 5 metres by 2.7 metres in size. It was constructed from logs with a cane lining set in a herringbone pattern. The roof cornice was also decorated with cane lining set in diagonal diamond patterns, from which projected a set of four antlers.
Kilkenny County Council are currently restoring the summer house.
