17 Japanese Arbor-vitae

Scientific Name – Thuja standishii

Native to Japan this tree is found very infrequently in Ireland and the UK in only the largest gardens and tree collections, with the best specimens all located in Ireland.

The bark is a rich, dark red with large, coarse plates lifting away with strips peeing away from their sides. It has a broadly conical growth pattern which can be open with low u – shaped branching curving upwards 1 - 2m away from the bole and bearing pale, yellowish green foliage. It grows to a maximum height of 20 -25m.
